The Asia Pacific College of Diplomacy was established by the Australian National University to foster high-level education, research and dialogue with respect to transnational diplomacy in the Asia-Pacific region. The decision to establish the College was announced in a joint press release issued on 13 January 2003 by the Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Honourable Alexander Downer MP, and the Vice-Chancellor and President of the The Australian National University, Professor Ian Chubb, AO. Faculty members carry out high-quality teaching and research, and engage in a range of public activities, working with government, the media, and the broader community. Faculty members also provide specialist advice and play an active role in appropriate professional bodies. Research in the Faculty is concerned with the advancement of knowledge in both theoretical and applied areas, and covers a wide range of topics. Faculty members regularly contribute to leading academic and professional journals, and publish books, monographs, and working papers. The Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies (RSPAS) is Australia's pre-eminent centre for research and postgraduate training on the Asia Pacific region. Priority areas for the School's research are Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and the Southwest Pacific. Research is focused on anthropology, archaeology, economics, history, human geography, international relations, linguistics, political science, resource management, and strategic and defence studies. With more than 100 academic staff, the School represents one of the largest concentrations of expertise on the Asia-Pacific region in the world. The School has an enrolment of over 180 PhD students and 250 Masters students, with students representing about 90 different nationalities. The Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies is located at the centre of the ANU campus in Australia's national capital, Canberra. Professor Robin Jeffrey is the Director of the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies. |
