ASIAN FEDERATION AGAINST INVOLUNTARY DISAPPEARANCE (AFAD)

AFAD is a regional federation of organizations of families of victims of involuntary disappearances from China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Its headquarters is in the Philippines.

Founded in 1998 to promote solidarity, communication, networking and advocacy among its member-organizations and networks. AFAD links arms with international, regional and national formations from other continents.

ASIAN HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION

“Independent non-governmental which seeks to promote greater awareness and realisation of human rights in the Asian region, and to mobilise Asian and international public opinion to obtain relief and redress for the victims of human rights violations.”

Based in Hongkong. the Commission campaigns for an Asian Charter on the Rule of Law, runs an urgent appeals programme, a Human Rights Correspondence School (http://www.hrschool.org/ ) and other campaigns. Focus lies on the right to remedy and institutional reform in particular with regard to the eradication of torture. Its journal “Article 2″ (www.article2.org) highlights institutional aspects of rule of law and human rights reforms with an emphasis on Article 2 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. The AHRC is the sister organisation of the Asian Legal Resource Centre (www.alrc.net) a regional human rights NGO with general consutative status at the UN.

ASIA PACIFIC FORUM

The Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions “provides a framework for national human rights institutions to work together and cooperate on a regional basis through a wide range of services including training, capacity building, networks and staff exchanges.” Member countries extend from Palestinian Territories in west to Australia and Timor Leste in east.

ASIAN LEGAL RESOURCE CENTRE

The Asian Legal Resource Centre (ALRC) is an NGO having General Consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. The ALRC was founded in 1986 by a prominent group of jurists and human rights activists in Asia. It is a body committed to the development of legal self-reliance and empowerment of people. It places particular emphasis in its work on the areas of cultural, social and economic rights and the right of development. ALRC will works closely with and supports regional, national, and local groups in this field, taking care, at the same time, to protect the autonomy and independence of such groups.
