Mini-Update on Indonesia at the Lowy Institute for International Policy

By Trish van der Hoek

A half-day Mini-Update on Indonesia was held on Thursday 29 September at the Lowy Institute for International Policy with the Indonesia Project as co-host. (The Lowy Institute is an independent, non-partisan think tank which researches international political, strategic and economic issues from an Australian perspective.) The theme – Indonesia’s Place in the World – was the same as that of the Indonesia Update at the ANU which took place on 30 September-1 October and the event featured key speakers from the ANU Update. Linda Jakobson from the Lowy Institute gave the opening address, followed by Political and Economic Updates by Greg Fealy and Chris Manning from the ANU. These deliveries provoked a lively and interesting question and answer session.

The ANU Indonesia Update convenor, Anthony Reid, made some general remarks concerning Indonesia’s Place in the World, followed by talks on the same theme by Chatib Basri (University of Indonesia), Don Emmerson (Stanford University) and Martin van Bruinessen (Utrecht University). These presentations provoked another stimulating  question and answer session

The event attracting an audience of around 30 comprising media, business people, and Indonesianists.
