2019 FKP Roadshow in Jayapura and Ambon (1)

ANU Indonesia Project organized the 2019 Forum Kajian Pembangunan (FKP) Roadshow on 23 January 2019 in Jayapura and on 25 January 2019 in Ambon on the issue of food security.

The FKP Roadshow was convened in collaboration with Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), the Faculty of Economics and Business of Gadjah Mada University (Yogyakarta), the Faculty of Economics and Business of Cenderawasih University (Papua) and Faculty of Agriculture of Pattimura University (Ambon).

The FKP Roadshow seminar in Jayapura was entitled Food Security and Mining Sector in Papua and was held in the rectorate building of the Cenderawasih University.  The rector of Cenderawasih University, Dr. Apolo Safanpo, opened the seminar and presented his notes on issues related to the recent divestment of the Freeport Indonesia mining company.  His presentation then followed by a panel of speakers each presenting their research on the issue of food insecurity in Papua. The panel of speakers were Budy Resosudarmo  ANU Indonesia Project), Catur Sugiyanto (Gadjah Mada University), Julius Ary Mollet and John Numberi (Cenderawish University) and  Esta Lestari (LIPI).  Approximately 80 people participated in this seminar.  Most of them are faculty members of Cenderawasih University from various departments.  Some others are graduate students, local government officials and Freeport Indonesia’s representative.

The main debate in this forum was on how to strengthen the production of local staple food, sago, and improve the general welfare of people in Papua. How to manage mining revenue to strengthen and improve the productivity of the food sector was another issue being discussed in this forum. At the end of the seminar, Julius Ary Mollet gave closing remarks and provided a short summary on what was discussed during the seminar.  He did hope that more seminars such as this can be convened more frequently at Cenderawasih University.

The FKP Roadshow seminar in Ambon was entitled Food Security in Maluku and mainly discussed how to improve food security in the context of Maluku’s small islands. Professor John Markus Matinahoru, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Pattimura University,  made the opening remaks and outlined several issues related to food insecurity in Maluku. The panel of speakers in Ambon consisted of Budy Resosudarmo, Catur Sugiyanto, Esta Lestari Julius Ary Mollet and Wardis Girsang (Pattimura University).  Approximately 120 people participated in this seminar.  Most of them were students and faculty members of the Pattimura University. Some local government officials, religious leaders and local cultural leaders also attended the seminar. Similar as the situation in the FKP Roadshow seminar, the discussion in the seminar in Ambon also focused on how to improve the efficiency and productivity of various local staple food have been existed in Maluku.  At the end of the seminar, Wardis Girsang gave the closing notes.
