President Joko Widodo met with the ANU Indonesia Project

Indonesian President Jokowi met with the Head of ANU Indonesia Project Associate Professor Budy Resosudarmo during his Australian state visit

 

The Head of the ANU Indonesia Project, Associate Professor Budy Resosudarmo, was invited by the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, HE General the Hon Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Retd), to attend a State lunch on 26 February 2017 in honour of His Excellency Mr Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia and Her Excellency Mrs Iriana Joko Widodo, at Admiralty House in Sydney. Among the 26 guests from Australia were the Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, the Hon Bill Shorten MP, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, the Hon Steven Ciobo MP, the Hon Tony Smith MP and Rear Admiral Stuart Mayer CSC and Bar RAN. The ANU Indonesia Project was the only Australian research institute represented at the lunch.

Associate Professor Resosudarmo had the opportunity to discuss with President Widodo the important work of the ANU Indonesia Project. He informed the President that ANU has at least 50 academics working on Indonesia—which is the largest concentration of Indonesianists outside Indonesia—and that the ANU Indonesia Project has been running a world-class academic program for more than 50 years.

The President encouraged ANU to continue producing high quality analysis on Indonesia.

Associate Professor Resosudarmo also had the opportunity to talk with a number of Ministers from the Indonesian Cabinet and senior officials, including HE Mrs Retno Marsudi (the Indonesian Minister for Foreign Affairs), HE Mr Thomas Lembong (Head of the Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board), HE Mr Enggartiasto Lukito (the Indonesian Minister for Trade), HE Dr Pramono Anung (the Indonesian Cabinet Secretary) and Mr Johan Budi (the Indonesian Presidential Spokesman).

In addition to highlighting the activities of the ANU Indonesia Project, Associate Professor Resosudarmo provided analysis on issues related to trade conditions between Australia and Indonesia, the current Jakarta governor election,  Indonesian students in Australia, and Australian tourism in Indonesia.

Associate Professor Resosudarmo also encouraged cabinet members to visit the ANU Indonesia Project and deliver a lecture, as other Ministers have done in the past.

The ANU Indonesia Project is proud to be at the forefront of important political events such as President Widodo’s recent visit to Australia.
