Professor Schmidt’s lecture is entitled Evidence and Expertise in a Post-Truth World. He asserts that human society faces global scale challenges that can only be solved by a collective approach informed by knowledge and empowered by technology. However,  scientific evidence and expertise are no longer implicitly trusted. Objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than emotional appeals and personal beliefs. This spells disaster for scientists. How can we solve the world’s pressing problems without a renewed respect for evidence and expertise?

Brian P. Schmidt AC FAA FRS was appointed Vice-Chancellor of the ANU in January 2016. The Vice-Chancellor is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the ANU, and as such, Professor Schmidt and his team develop and implement strategies, policies and procedures to support the ANU to meet its strategic goals and operational needs. He is also a member of the Council. Winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics, Professor Schmidt was an astrophysicist at the ANU Mount Stromlo Observatory and Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics before becoming Vice-Chancellor.

Professor Schmidt received his undergraduate degrees in Astronomy and in Physics from the University of Arizona in 1989, and completed his Astronomy Master’s degree (1992) and PhD (1993) at Harvard University. Under his leadership, in 1998, the High-Z Supernova Search team made the startling discovery that the expansion rate of the Universe is accelerating. Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, The United States Academy of Science, and the Royal Society, he was made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 2013.
