The ANU Indonesia Project organised the inaugural Mubyarto Public Policy Forum on 10 May 2017 in Yogyakarta, in collaboration with the Faculty of Economics and Business at Gadjah Mada University.  The annual public policy forum series is in honour of the late Professor Mubyarto, a prominent economist at Gadjah Mada University, who was one of Indonesia’s most influential intellectuals on the issue of rural development between the 1960s and 1990. The goal of this forum is to stimulate debate on key development policy issues in Indonesia, particularly on rural development topics.

Approximately 150 people attended this event, more than the venue could accommodate, so that the event had to be delivered via television to the overflow audience outside the room.  Members of Mubyarto’s family, his wife and granddaughter, attended the forum as well.

Professor Boediono (Universitas Gadjah Mada; Indonesia’s Vice President 2009-2014) delivered keynote remarks entitled Beberapa Catatan mengenai Strategi Pemerataan Pembangunan (Notes on Equitable Development Strategy). As a prologue to his remarks, Professor Boediono reflected on the late Professor Mubyarto, and how the throughout his lifetime he was concerned that development should also benefit the poor. In his remarks, Professor Boediono also reminded everyone that the problem of equitable development can only be solved if the state, through its institutions, is able to implement effective interventions. Professor Boediono’s remarks in full can be read on his Facebook page, through this link.
