The Bulletin of Indonesian Economic Studies (BIES) Economic Dialogue and Forums are designed as invitations for Indonesian academics, policy makers, practitioners and researchers to discuss a selected paper published in the BIES each year. This year’s BIES paper selected was titled Family hardship and the growth of micro and small firms in Indonesia, written by Dr Rasyad Parinduri from the Nottingham University.

The BIES Economic Dialogue was held for the second year at the Padjajaran University (Unpad). The Dialogue was organised by the Centre for Economics and Development Studies (CEDS), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Padjajaran University. It took place on Monday, 1 December 2014, in Bale Rumawat, Jl Dipati Ukur, Bandung.

The BIES Dialogue theme this year is Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesian society (Usaha kecil dan menengah di Indonesia).

In addition to Dr Parinduri as the speaker, Dr Nining Susilo, an SMEs expert, Dr Dwi Larso from SBM ITB and Dr H Asep Mulyana from Padjajaran University also sat in the panel. The Dean of FEB Unpad, Professor Nury Effendi, opened the Dialogue.

The Dialogue was attended by more than 100 people, half of which are female. Most attendees were undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty members from FEB Unpad, Sekolah Tinggi Komunikasi and Parahyangan University. This event was also broadcasted worldwide through Unpad livestreaming, where audience can send in questions for the panel regardless of locations.

The series continued in Yogyakarta with the BIES Economic Forum. It was held on 2 December and organised by the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Gadjah Mada University (UGM). Sat in the panel were Dr Rasyad Parinduri, Dr Eny Sulisyaningrum from FEB UGM and Dr Firman Witoelar from Survey Meter. The Forum discussed the BIES paper written by Dr Parinduri. The Dean of FEB, Professor Wihana Kirana opened the dialog. This event was also broadcasted live through FEB website. Sri Adiningsih, Director of the Institute for Research and Training Economics and Business (P2EB) UGM, attended this Forum. It ended with lunch where participants sat down together for further discussions on possible collaboration between P2EB and ANU Indonesia Project.

BIES Economic Forum and Update Book Launch in Manado

 

The final leg of the BIES Economic Forum was held in Manado, North Sulawesi. The 2013 Update Book was also launched during this event which was held on 4 December at Sam Ratulangi University (Unsrat). The panelists were Dr Parinduri, Dr Een Walewangko from Unsrat and Dr Vecky Masinambow also from Unsrat. The Forum and the Update Book were opened and launched by the Dean of Faculty of Economics (Fekon) Unsrat, Professor David Paul Elia Saerang. Approximately 100 people attended the Forum, with most were students and faculty members of Fekon Unsrat, University of Manado and Sekolah Tinggi Informatika Manado. Half of the participants were female. We found out that most faculty members in Unsrat were not aware of ANU Indonesia Project activities. We are currently working to enable Unsrat to have free access to BIES online.
