The Thee Kian Wie (TKW) distinguished visiting professorship is a joint initiative by DFAT and ANU to honour the contributions of the late Dr Thee Kian Wie. A highly distinguished Indonesian economist is invited to take up a visiting position each year in the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics for up to three months during the period of appointment.

The third appointee is Professor Mari Pangestu. Professor Pangestu served as Indonesia’s Minister of Trade from 2004 to 2011, and as Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy from 2011 until October 2014. She has acquired vast experience over 25 years in academia, international organizations and government, working in areas related to international trade and investment in the multilateral, regional, and domestic setting. As Minister of Trade she played an active role in the WTO; initiated various Ministers of Trade meetings; and provided leadership in regional cooperation at ASEAN in 2011, and at APEC. Before becoming Minister, from 1987 to 2003, she provided policy advice on international trade and investment issues, political economy of reforms, and sustainable development issues.

As part of Professor Pangestu’s first visit (11- 19 September) as TKW Distinguished Visiting Professor she convened the 2017 Indonesia Update along with Arianto Patunru (ANU) and M Chatib Basri (University of Indonesia).
