On 29 April 2015, three recipients of Research Travel Grants presented research findings from their Indonesian field trips to the Indonesia Study Group. Daniel Carney from the University of Tasmania gave a presentation entitled “Expatriates in the Village: Examining Social Spaces and Boundaries in Watu Karung”. He highlighted his interesting findings regarding surfing tourism on Java’s south coast. The second presentation by Anna Strempel from Monash University looked at “Inequalities in the International Aid and Development Sector”. She offered an explanation as to how such inequality might create resentment in the community. Finally, Edryan Ja’afar of La Trobe Univesity presented “Primal Fire: Animism and Mysticism in the 21st Century Jogyakarta”. He gave an interesting discussion on Jogyakarta’s sacred sites such as Mt. Merapi, Parangkusumo, and the royal cemeteries of Kota Gede and Imogiri. The ISG seminar was chaired by Professor Ross McLeod. All the presenters benefited from insightful comments from senior scholars such as Professors Anthony Reid and George Quinn.
