In 2015, the ANU Indonesia Project initiated the Young Scientist Forum (YSF) in collaboration with the association of Indonesian students in the United States of America (Persatuan Pelajar Indonesia di Amerika Serikat or PPIA) and four universities in Indonesia. The YSF brings recent PhD graduates in natural sciences to universities in Indonesia to inspire innovative research and a career in research and development.

This year, the YSF was convened on 12 September 2017 hosted by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Universitas Indonesia (FMIPA UI) in Depok. The speakers were Edbert Jarvis Sie and Satrio Wicaksono. Edbert recently completed his PhD in physics at the MIT and is currently a researcher at Stanford University. Satrio received his PhD in geology from Brown University and is currently a researcher at World Resources Institute (WRI). Edbert’s presentations was entitled¬† “Using light to control the properties of atomically thin materials” and Satrio’s “From lakes to forests: a small research contribution for a resilient and sustainable environment in Indonesia”.

About 60 people attended the event, mostly undergraduate students of FMIPA UI. Edbert also had a chance to reunite with Professor Terry Mart, one of Indonesia’s leading researchers in physics, who had mentored him during high school.

In November 2017, the YSF will be convened at Universitas Hasanuddin (Makassar) and Universitas Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (Surabaya).
