North Korean – Nankong pullakŭi yosae

May 26th, 2011 · No Comments · Korean (North), Security, Sovereignty

난공불락의 요새

Nankong pullakŭi yosae (variations: 철옹성 ch’ŏlongsŏng, 철벽의 요새 ch’ŏlpyŏkŭi yosae)

‘Impregnable fortress’

Relates to sovereignty

The necessity of turning the country into an impregnable fortress – be it in the face of a physical or psychological attack by the evil overseas forces – is a popular concept in North Korea. The curious logical contradiction here is that this call for self-isolation contradicts the popular propagandistic narrative in which the recent economic hardships of the DPRK are said to be the result of the enforced international isolation of the country, initiated by vicious USA imperialists.

Examples:

온 나라를 난공불락의 요새로 전변시키다[1]

“to turn the whole country into impregnable fortress”

The “impregnable fortress” here is mentioned as a positive goal.

사회주의 조국을 철옹성같이 지켜나가야 한다.[2]

“We have to protect our socialist native land as an impregnable fortress.”

The concept of the ‘impregnable fortress’ elaborates upon the desire to ‘live our way’ which is formulated in the title of the article. Turning the country into ‘impregnable fortress’, or closing it from any foreign contacts is the desired strategy of the official Pyongyang to achieve the DPRK’s security, to protect its freedom and sovereignty.

당의 선군 혁명 로선을 생명선으로 틀어쥐고 인민군대를 백방으로 강화하여 온 나라를 철벽의 요새로 다지는데 최우선적인 힘을 돌려야 한다.[3]

We must turn the Party strategy of military-first revolution into our life strategy and put all our efforts into the strengthening of our army in every direction, and turning all of our country into an impregnable fortress.”

As we see from the quote above, the way to turn the country into the desired “impregnable fortress” is first and foremost military.
