The inaugural Australian South Sea Islanders Conference (6th – 9th April 2012) celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Human Rights Equal Opportunity Commission’s (HREOC) “Call for Recognition” for descendants of the Blackbirding era. The main purpose of the Conference was to establish a national body that represents one voice to National and International Governments on the pressing needs for Australian South Sea Islanders – the descendants of the Australian ‘Black birding’ era 1863-1904.
