In this Public Seminar Dr. Sakuntala Kadirgamar will take the audience inside the UN’s high-profile standby mediation team, which supports mediation processes around the globe. She will discuss:

• What the Standby Team is, how it works, and where it deploys

• Recent innovations in mediating global conflict

• The challenges mediators face in the Asia-Pacific region

Dr. Sakuntala Kadirgamar is a senior democracy and governance expert, with extensive experience providing policy and technical advice on constitutional and governance reform, the design of electoral systems and political party reforms, transitional justice and mainstreaming gender and social inclusion in fragile states and post-conflict countries. From 2015-2017 she was the Constitution Advisor and the Gender Advisor for the United Nations Stand-by Team of Mediation Experts. She has also served as UN Adviser to the National Dialogue Conference of Yemen, as Senior Constitution Adviser to the UN Political Office for Somalia and to UNDP in Nepal, and as Senior Constitution Adviser at the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA) and the Head of the Asia Program (IDEA). Dr. Kadirgamar is currently the Country Director for Democracy Reporting International (DRI) in Sri Lanka, where DRI is supporting efforts to strengthen the constitution reform process, the right to information and the effective implementation of international human rights and labour law conventions.
