This paper explores how the dissemination of information through the media shapes people’s perceptions of their consumption relative to others. The research involves exploiting variation in the rollout of private television coverage in the late 1990s and early 2000s in Indonesia. I use differences in geographic topography as part of my strategy to identify a causal effect.
