The politics of (in-)justice in contemporary China

Elisa Nesossi
Since the early 2000s, the Chinese discourse on law and justice has become associated with accounts of miscarriages of justice. This seminar explores changes in the administration of China’s criminal justice over the last thirty years by tracing the ways in which cases of miscarriages of justice have been handled through the Jiang, Hu, and Xi eras. It highlights how the public disclosure of errors in the justice system has resulted in legal reforms and, at the same time, has benefitted China’s ruling party’s governance agendas and legitimacy.
