Join us to go under the hood of the Facebook News Feed algorithm. News Feed is the personalised stream of stories, recommendations and news that people see when they log in to their Facebook account. Personalisation and algorithms raise important questions about freedom of expression, the rise of polarisation, the spread of misinformation, and the future of the news media. Facebook executive Andy O’Connell will share details about how the News Feed algorithm works, how users can take control of their online experiences, and what this all may mean for public policy and civil discourse.
Andy O’Connell serves as Facebook’s Head of Content Distribution & Algorithm Policy, leading work related to the future of news, misinformation, transparency, and freedom of expression.
A Seattle native and a graduate of the Harvard Kennedy School, Andy joined Facebook in 2014 after five years in the Obama administration, including service at the Pentagon and the State Department. He represents Facebook on the Board of the Global Network Initiative.
This event is hosted by the Crawford School of Public Policy at ANU College of Asia and the Pacific.
