Darkness – Fire – Sutra
Bilingual Tanka Poetry Collection by Noriko Tanaka

Translated by Carol Hayes and Noriko Tanaka

This poetry collection was born of the joint art installation project by visual-artist Savanhdary Vongpoothorn and poet-calligrapher Noriko Tanka.

It includes the tanka that forms part of their work "Footsteps to the Nigatsu-Do".

Giving voice to the spirit of the ‘omizutori’ ceremony held each year at Tōdai-ji’s Nigatsu-dō, Tanaka’s tanka evokes the long darkness of winter, the flames of the torches, the chanting of the monks – giving voice to the space between the human world and the world of the eleven-faced Kannon of the Nigatsu-dō.

夜の底の拓かれてゆく水音や時空の階に無のときがある

the sound of water colours the darkness of the night

nothingness

on the stairway of space and time

大寺の薄き帳の向こう側遠き世の火が燃えてゐるなり

this noble temple - that distant realm

through the thin veil

torches burn bright

The event is supported by the Australia Council for the Arts, ANU Visual Arts Foundation, the Japan Institute and the Drill Hall Gallery.
