Abstract

Avraga is an archaeological site in eastern Mongolia that has been claimed to be Chinggis Khan’s ordu—his base camp and home during some winters.

Mongolia Institute Director Jack Fenner will describe new data from livestock bones at the site that provide a more precise estimate of when the site was occupied, and how that relates to Chinggis Khan’s lifetime. He will also show how the chemistry of livestock bones can be used to improve our understanding of certain broad aspects of human diet during the Mongol Empire.
