When reporting on the 2014 Indonesian Presidential election, Sita met ANU Indonesian specialist Professor Ed Aspinall and assisted him with research work. Through her work with Ed and through her experience covering the election, she gained the courage and confidence to apply for the Australia Award scholarship program.
12 months later, Sita found herself on campus learning with students from around the world.
She was drawn to the Master of Asia Pacific Studies because she wanted to understand Indonesia’s place in a broader regional context.
She chose ANU because of the university’s reputation for having the largest concentration of Indonesia specialists.
“Some of the Indonesia experts I’d already known for quite a while through my journalism work. I liked that I’d met with them on the ground in Indonesia. They’re so familiar with their subject matter, they can see issues from Indonesia’s perspective, not only from Australia’s perspective, and that’s really important,” says Sita.
When she completes the program, Sita will take her expertise back to the Jakarta Post.
“Many of the audiences of the Jakarta Post are international, so getting different viewpoints from my teachers, as well as my classmates is not only interesting but will help me become a better journalist”.
“People say it’s the post-truth era but what gives me hope is that democracy in Indonesia is thriving. It’s more important than ever for mainstream media to inform, educate and inspire voters and encourage them to be more involved in the democratic process,” says Sita.
“That said, it is becoming increasingly challenging for those in journalism to prove to people that they can still rely on journalism. In an era of alternative facts, it’s going to take hard work and lots of stakeholders to show people they can still trust on the industry. I’m keen to take on this challenge, I want to be part of the collective that makes journalism better.”
