Monday = Yellow

June 26th, 2006 by Nicholas Farrelly · 5 Comments

Today in a small town, where the mountains rise from the plain, the yellow shirts are out in force.  These celebrations have potency and on-going interest far from Bangkok.  I am almost expecting that for the rest of the year, up until the King’s birthday and beyond, this current generation of yellow shirts will continue to be worn day-to-day.  They are a great look, one of these days I will need to get one myself.

    One of the reasons for the pervasive Yellow Mondays is because every (royal) government offices (and a number of private companies) throughout the country has issued an “invitation for cooperation” asking their employees to wear yellow shirts everyday from 1-15 June and every monday after that until the end of the year. Yes, you’re right. The Yellow Mondays will continue to be in force till the end of the year.

    Varaporn,

    Thanks for pointing out the existence of this “invitation”. I look forward to the many yellow Mondays to come.

    [...] This coup could never have been called on a Monday.  Monday is, as we have remarked many times on New Mandala, the King’s day.  This year it has been marked as the day of yellow shirts and public ritual. [...]

    [...] Back in June – when a coup was almost unthinkable and when the afterglow of the royal celebrations was still fresh - I wrote my very first piece for New Mandala. It was published on 20 June 2006. I was in Bangkok at the time and had been struck by the yellow shirts that had become a ubiquitous social and political statement by then.
