		<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>[...] Before the whiff of Sonthi&#8217;s &#8220;democratic reform&#8221;Â filled the air, there was a night, 21 August 2006,Â when Thai television ran continuous reports on fisticuffs between opponents and supporters of then Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra .Â ForÂ footage of the commotion, and theÂ scuffles of that day,Â check outÂ this 8 minute video.Â At the time, IÂ posted my brief reaction to events on New Mandala and concludedÂ by writing: As the commentary in tonightâ€™s TV coverage made clear,Â this has now become a fight over the â€śmeaningâ€ť of that democracy.Â Everybody seems to have anÂ opinion on its limits and its potential. I have yet to hear anybody define â€śdemocracyâ€ť as fisticuffs in a downtown shopping mall.Â Â Letâ€™s all hope that todayâ€™s violence does not lead to further escalation.Â Â [...]</p>
