In the past week, international coverage of Laos has focussed on alleged atrocities against the Hmong. Following the release of a new documentary film titled Hunted Like Animals, some have even made claims of genocide. Many New Mandala readers will be aware that similiar claims have been made regarding Burmese government activities in the Karen State.
Much history obviously infuses these claims of genocide. They must not be considered on face value alone. They deserve much further analysis and reflection.
That such claims are possible today is yet another sign that horrific things still go on in this region. The key questions are:
- Is anybody shocked anymore?
And
- Under weight of evidence, and the passing of years, will these atrocities, and claims of genocide, ever prompt more than timid international responses?
