“Final boarding call for all passengers flying to Naypyidaw”

Burmese airport, Shan State, 2006

Air Bagan - Burma’s most professional and savvy airline – has announced that it is seeking to develop an international business.  Partly owned by the country’s richest businessman, Te Za, and his Htoo Company, it is, by any measure, a slicker domestic carrier than its many woeful “competitors”.

With Air Asia now flying to Rangoon, there are increasing options for travellers seeking to get in (and out!) of Burma.  This will not impress boycott advocates, who see every new tourist development in Burma as a further buttress for the military regime.  Air Bagan’s plans for expansion will make them even angrier.

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
