Today, news from The Irrawaddy and many others, that Burma has been listed on the United Nations Security Council agenda. The big push came from the Americans, with France and Britain in support. The Chinese sound displeased, and the Chinese Ambassador has even been quoted calling the decision “preposterous”. Along with the Russians, the Chinese delegation opposed the motion (thanks to regular New Mandala reader Matt Pennycook for drawing this important development to my attention on a busy day).
Along with most of the world’s major media outlets, we will be closely following this new stage in what is a growing international battle of wills…and wits.

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
