19/9, a Tuesday

September 20th, 2006 by Nicholas Farrelly · 4 Comments

This coup could probably never have been called on a Monday. Monday is – as we have remarked many times on New Mandala - the King’s day. This year it has been marked as the day of yellow shirts and collective public ritual.

In this same cultural scheme, the most auspicious number in the traditional Thai worldview is 9. It has connotations of progress and advancement. That the coup happened today, 19/9 is probably not coincidental.

And while Mondays are celebrated as the King’s day, Tuesdays have a very different meaning in traditional Thai worldviews. Tuesday is a strong day.

It is the best day…

…for going to war.

    Nick

Also, it was at 9pm! From The Nation:

9.00 pm The Army’s special forces from Lopburi arrive at the Army’s Bangkok headquarters.

Web surfers post messages on Pantip.com asking if there is a coup de tat.

not just Tuesday is a strong day. Saturday is also a strong day. do a bit more research and give the right fact to others otherwise you’re pretty much similar to those stupid news writers and irresponsible journalists.

Wow Judi, how impolite to make such a harsh comment like that. Shame on you for being so petty, and it really was petty.
Perhaps your parents forgot to teach you about good manners and the real meaning of ‘mai pen rai’.

[...] That the announcement was made at 9:29 am is, again, probably not a coincidence.  The report continues: Among other things, the interim charter absolves the CDR for staging the coup. [...]

There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved.
