UK Television: Burma’s Secret War

October 2nd, 2006 by Nicholas Farrelly · 5 Comments

This documentary - which reportedly follows the “Free Burma Rangers” around the country’s periphery - will be screened on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom at 8 pm on Monday, 2 October 2006.  Based on the exploits of Australian journalist Evan Williams who films illegally inside Burma, “Burma’s Secret War” has the potential to be the best television about that country’s woes since Williams’ 2001 effort – “Burma Drugs”.

New Mandala will be watching closely.

Thanks to Lucy for the original tip.

Any idea where I can get a transcript of this show? It was fascinating – I wanted to dig into the specific statistics deeper. Channel 4 stated that it doesn’t have transcripts and that they will not be airing the show again. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Hi Janie,

    Thanks for your interest.

I have no direct experience of the boycott campaigns that target foreign investment in Burma but, if you are keen to be involved, you may like to contact some of the more prominent groups. In the UK, probably the most high-profile is The Burma Campaign (http://www.burmacampaign.org.uk/). It has a number of aims, including divestment from Burma and further trade sanctions.

    Best wishes,

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
