Surakiart bows out of race for UN gig

October 7th, 2006 by Nicholas Farrelly · 1 Comment

Over the past day or so, many news sources have been reporting that the Thai and ASEAN candidate for United Nations Secretary-General, Dr Surakiart Sathirathai, has withdrawn from the contest.  The website that carried information on his candidacy now seems to have been taken offline.

Since the coup, Surakiart’s bid for this lofty position has seemed even more unlikely than it did when he had the support of the serving Prime Minister and his cabinet colleagues.  Without the backing of junta heavies, or political stability in his home country, he was unlikely to last long.  His withdrawl is hardly unexpected.

The South Korean candidate, Ban Ki-moon, is now the only one still in the race.

He wasted a lot of Thai taxpayers’ money on this race. Even the Thais were rooting against him . . imagine that!

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
