New Rambo and Free Burma

October 10th, 2006 by Nicholas Farrelly · 8 Comments

In one of the most unexpected pieces of news to come out this week, the Bangkok Post, and others, are reporting that the new Rambo film, Rambo IV: In the Serpent’s Eye, follows the title character as he fights Burmese “pirates/soldiers” to free captured Christian missionaries.  According to these initial reports, the missionaries in the film are trying to deliver aid to displaced Karen.  Most interestingly, Sylvester Stallone is “going to write, direct and produce the film himself”.

Filming is said to begin early in 2007.

I’ve been seeing rumors about this movie for the last few months, but it looks like this is the first official synopsis I’ve seen. And pirates? How did pirates get into landlocked jungles of Burma? I’m not sure I’ve actually seen any of the old Rambo movies, but I fear I will be compelled to watch this one.

Pirates off the rocky southwest coast of Burma. Assuming that the Kanchanaburi entrance to eastern Burma is inaccessible due to Thai/SLORC/drug-lords/ethnic-militias, the only way to enter Burma would be from the sea. Once he gets inside the country, he’ll be fighting SLORC soldiers in the jungles, ala Rambo II.

I hope that Rambo has finally found his moral compass. In Rambo II he was fighting the Vietnamese and in Rambo III he was aiding the Taliban. With the SLORC, *finally* he has found villains that the world can hiss at without cringing! :-)

Back in the early 1990s their were KNU “pirates” extracting money from the largely Thai fishing boats in the waters the SLORC opened up for fishing concessions. Of course, that won’t be who Rambo is fighting, but hey, I don’t think Stallone is going to let good ethnography stand in the way of a good story, and pirates are always a good story. I just hope Mel Gibson is the co-star!

I have seen Stallone’s films since my childhood. Yea,here,
“Rambo” I was crazy about this film while I was in a primary
school in Thantlang, Chin State.I am amazed and thrilled
that he is going to rambo again in this jungle of rarely explored Burma. I hope Rambo alone could fight any kind of juntas in in the world. But, he must come here with a very fast chopper with long legs so it could land down at any place since Burma has only few airports.

Caution: Hey, Big Rambo, don’t forget to bring your Burmese natioanal ID card to enter Burma. he he !!!!

    hEY, bIG rAMBO,
Pirates? Who are pirates in Burma? No, there is no pirate.
But there pop up only ruthless dictators and women-hungry soldiers across the country. Generation to generation dictatorship is handed over and over ignoring its people’s desire. The Burmese people have been waiting for some one, of course RAMBO, to end the never-ever-ending-gun-ruling era of these tyrannical SPDC thugs.
Actually, the people of Burma also needs the Redeemer as do the captured missisonaries. So, RAMBO, why not to come to Rangoon City to rescue our Lady Suu Kyi and her supporters
whom butcher-like SPDC have jailed them for decades. Have you ever heard about INSEIN JAIL? Someone says,” If there is Hell on Earth, it must be Insein Jail.”She and her friends are dying soon
if there is no rescuer like RAMBO.
Therefore, just FEEL FREE TO BROADEN YOUR BATTLE FIELD in Burma. Assume that the people are your best friends as you are always fond to the civillians in your action films.

    yOUR fRIEND,

    cHINrAMBO

It is slated to be filmed in a Thai national park in the far north over the coming dry season. The global media just gorges on this kind of story and, well, why not? [...]
