For students of Southeast Asian politics and political communication, this extract, from a longer official Burmese article denouncing the National League for Democracy, is a good example of some well-used rhetorical devices. It comes from Maung Cetana, “She who turned alien or danger to the nation”, The New Light of Myanmar, 5 July 2006, page 9. Maung Cetana writes, in part:
Today, Myanmar is practising the national politics, not liberal policy…The ruling government is the national government, the policy is the scientific nationalism, the economic system is the market-oriented economy or capitalism under the leadership of the State, and the political aim is discipline-flourishing democracy (national democracy) to be introduced in accordance with the Asian way.

That description of the ideal Burmese government doesn’t sound so different from the way the Thai government is being run.

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved.
