Thwin Lin Aung’s education in Burma

March 20th, 2007 by Nicholas Farrelly · 1 Comment

The Irrawaddy has an article on the recent arrest of a young Burmese student by that country’s military regime.  According to the report:

The junta has specifically targeted young students seeking access to foreign universities. One such student—Thwin Lin Aung—was arrested on March 5 at Rangoon International Airport just before he was scheduled to board a flight to the US. The reason for his arrest and the location of his detention remain unknown.

Since 1988, pro-democracy students have been unjustly imprisoned by Burmese authorities and marginalized in their attempts to rehabilitate their lives after their release through education. Thwin Lin Aung was prohibited from continuing his education at Rangoon Institute of Technology prior to his attempts to study abroad.

And the sad corollary to this sort of story which has been going on for decades, is that by working with them or citing their help or work, a westerner like myself might be compromising their safety.

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
