New Mandala readers will be interested in this forthcoming event. It puts six relatively big-name speakers on the one bill. This is another evening that will be worth some New Mandala coverage.
The SOAS Students Union Thai Society have asked to publicise the following event. Inquiries about this event should be addressed to thaisocietysoas@yahoo.co.uk, and NOT to CSEAS.
SOAS Thai society in conjunction with the Royal Thai embassy are hosting a talk about Thailand after the coup. A number of important Thai dignitaries are visiting the UK and will be comming to SOAS at 6PM Wednesday 23rd May in room V111 at SOAS’s vernon square campus. There will be a talk by 6 different speakers with a question and answer session afterwards. Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no need to book a seat. Kraisak Choonhaven – Previous Thai senator
Kavi Chongkittavorn – Assistant group editor, Nation Multimedia Group and Chairman of the Bangkok based Free media advocacy group
Surasee Kosolnavin – Commisioner of National Human rights Commission of Thailand
Charas Suwanmala – Professor and Dean, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University
Surat Horachaikul – Lecturer, Department of International Relations, Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University

Note that the speakers will be in London as part of the Surayud government’s international public relations campaign. It is an activity in the context of the government’s Committee on Public Relations in the Time of Crisis and Pro-active Public Relations (”War room”). They will also visit Germany. There was a brief note on this in Matichon (April 22, 2007) by Khun Prasarn, the spokesperson of that committee. I did not know, though, that Kavi would join them, but it does not surprise me a bit.

To be fair, give credit where credit’s due. It’s good to see (at least from the announcement) that SOAS’s CSEAS seems to have publically disassociated itself from this one. But one hopes some of them will be there to heckle Kraisak after his performance last time he was at SOAS. And if Srithanonchai is right, then the rest of the speakers should also be roundly condemned for allowing themselves to be used as the propaganda arm of a royalist-military dictatorship (and no doubt receiving a nice pay cheque for their trouble) – as should the SOAS Thai Society for hosting them. If not I hope we can rely on Nicholas to ask the tough questions, though he will probably not make himself popular in that company.

Another one-sided event hosted by SOAS. I wonder if anyone there will have anything nice to say about Thaksin or will it be he is the spawn of the devil?
Nick: Make sure you ask them who paid for the trip? And ask if they are part of the CNS propaganda campaign?

Srithanonchai is correct, this was reported as being an event paid for by the military-backed government. Kraisak looked so uncomfortable last time, with the spinmeister Sondhi mouthing off next to him, so it will be interesting to see his performance this time. Why is Sulak in the pay of the junta??

A second thought…. Maybe they are going to rebel and spill the beans on this junta! Maybe they’ll reconsider their own roles in the coup and the disaster that has followed it. Maybe.

“Why is Sulak in the pay of the junta??” Because Surayud promised him he would get rid of his lese majeste charge? Sulak already complained that, so far, Surayud had not done as promised.

Im not sure about recent Sulaks case some said about.
But once he’s not guilty when the junta in 90s charged him.
And you have to remember that before Sulak was supporter of Thaksin regime, same as old seniors who called him ‘black water bauffalo KNIGHT~
And how the regime bcame? How Thai people who loves democracy with ‘its spirit’ were ‘hijacked’ by the former regime?
I’m happy that these guys should make up their minds now.

German’s Friedrich Ebert Foundation was so kind to organize a round table so that the Thai delegation in Berlin could reach German multipliers in order to make them understand the true democratic nature of the coup.

Well, SOAS has clarified that Thaksin has been given an invitation to speak but didn’t reply.
Considering that he avoided being questioned by an assembly populated with his own party members, this evasive behaviour is not entirely surprising.

เรื่อง ปฎิเสธข่าว นสพ มติชน หัวข้อ “ นักเรียนไทยรับถูกจ้างก่อม็อบที่อังกฤษ”
เรียน พี่น้องประชาชนชาวไทยทุกท่าน
ตามที่ปรากฏเป็นข่าวใน นสพ มติชน ฉบับ วันที่ 25 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2550 ปีที่ 30 ฉบับที่ 10667 หน้าที่ 13 ทางกลุ่มคนไทยปฏิเสธรัฐประหารในสหราชอาณรจักรจำต้อง ชี้แจง ข้อเท็จจริงในการเสนอ ข่าวดังกล่าว เพื่อเตือนให้คำนึงถึง จรรยาบรรณ ของอาชีพ “สื่อสารมวลชน” ดังนี้
1.) ตามที่มีการอ้างว่า น.ส. ทับทิม ประทีปวัธนวงศ์ มีการสอบถามกลับไปยัง น.ส.ทับทิม ประทีปวัธนวงศ์ ได้ความว่า “ไม่ได้ให้สัมภาษณ์ดังที่กล่าวอ้าง”
2.) อัตราส่วน ผู้ต่อต้านหรือสนับสนุนรัฐประหาร ๗๐ ต่อ ๓๐ ที่นักศึกษาผู้หนึ่ง ได้กล่าวไว้เป็นเพียงการสมมุติคาคคะเนเพื่ออธิบายความรู้สึก ไม่ได้เกิดจากการทำประชามติหรือการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลทางสถิติแต่อย่างใดซึ่งทางกลุ่มฯ พิจารณาเห็นว่า เนื้อข่าวที่เกิดจาก ข่าวลือ ข่าวที่ไม่ตรงจากความจริง และ ข่าวที่เกิดจากความรู้สึกนั้น ไม่ควรปรากฎในหนังสือพิมพ์มติชนอันเป็นหนังสือพิมพ์คุณภาพทางการเมืองที่ได้ยอมรับกันในวงกว้าง นอกจากนี้ ประเทศอังกฤษเป็นประเทศประชาธิปไตย จึงเป็นสิ่งที่น่าจะแปลกใจถ้านักศึกษาภายในประเทศกลับนิยมอำนาจเผด็จการ อย่างไรก็ตามความคิดเห็นดังกล่าว เป็นความคิดเห็นที่น่ารังเกียจมากไม่ควรจะเกิดขึ้นในสหราชอาณาจักร ซึ่งเป็นแม่แบบของประชาธิปไตย
3.) กรณีที่อ้างว่า ได้รับค่าจ้าง เพื่อมาชุมนุมที่หน้า สถานทูตไทย ณ กรุงลอนดอน ซึ่งตามข้อเท็จจริงดังกล่าวแล้ว
มิได้มีการ ว่าจ้างเกิดขึ้นตามที่เสนอข่าว และการดำเนินการต่างๆทั้ง การจัดรถมาหน้าสถานทูต การจัดเลี้ยงอาหารหลังดำเนินกิจกรรม และสวัสดิการต่างๆ นั้น เป็นเพียงน้ำใจของผู้ร่วมประท้วงคนหนึ่ง ไม่ได้เกิดจากการสนับสนุนจากบุคคลภายนอก โดยข้าพเจ้าเป็นผู้รับผิดชอบแต่เพียงผู้เดียวในฐานะเจ้าภาพงานและสามารถตรวจสอบการเงินของข้าพเจ้า ได้
อนึ่ง เนื้อหาในการแลกเปลี่ยนความคิดเห็นเกี่ยวกับสถานการณ์การเมืองนั้น ถูกใช้เพียงเพื่อโจมตีบุคคลทางการเมืองที่ไม่เห็นด้วยกับรัฐประหาร และ การโน้มน้าวให้เห็นด้วยกับการทำรัฐประหารอันเป็นสิ่งที่ยอมรับไม่ได้ทางสากล การที่รัฐบาลได้ส่งวอรูมมาเพียงเพื่อบรรยายกล่าวร้าย พ.ต.ท. ทักษิณ นั้น ทางกลุ่มเกิดคำถามว่าภารกิจดังกล่าว มีความจำเป็นคุ้มค่าแก่เงินภาษีของประชาชนทีเสียไปเพียงใด? เนื่องจากกิจกรรมดังกล่าวนอกจากไม่สร้างประโยชน์อันใดแล้ว กลับสร้างความแตกแยกมากขึ้นให้กับ คนไทยในต่างแดน สวนทางกับนโยบายสมานฉันท์ ของรัฐบาลในปัจจุบัน และนำไปสู่ความล่มจม ของคนในชาติ ตามพระราชดำรัสขององค์สมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ที่ทรงพระราชทานแต่ คณะศาลปกครอง ในวันที่ 24 พฤษภาคม นอกจากนี้ นอกจากนี้การบรรยายของนายสุรพงษ์ ในหัวข้อสถานการณ์การเมืองและกระบวนการประชาธิปไตยทั้งก่อนและหลังรัฐประหาร ควรจัดว่าเป็นการพูดโดยปราศจาคข้อเท็จจริงเนื่องจาก ประเทศไทยตอนนี้ถูกปกครองภายใต้ของระบอบเผด็จการ อย่างมิอาจปฎิเสธได้
จึงชี้แจงมาให้ทราบถึง ข้อเท็จจริงดังกล่าว โดยหวังว่า “สื่อมวลชน” คงยึดมั่นอยู่ในหลักวิชาชีพของตน และขอให้ประชาชนชาวไทยทุกท่านโปรดพิจารณา
