New Mandala readers in Canberra may be interested in a workshop that the ANU is hosting tomorrow (30 August, 9.30-12.30 AM)  on Global Investment and Community Transformation in Laos. There will be three presentations on international involvement in forest management, plantations and hydropower in Laos. Full details are available here. Previous New Mandala discussions on these issues are here and here.

Would have been quite useful if the 3 presentations could have been linked (pdf) to this blog. The debate is ongoing and resources are scarce.
For anyone with an interest in hydro development in Laos, see Bakker, Karen (1999). The politics of hydropower: developing the Mekong. Political Geography, 18, pp 209-232.

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
