Long-time New Mandala readers may remember that we have previously written about the latest installment in Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo series – Rambo IV: In the Serpent’s Eye. It is set along the Thai-Burma border and was shot in northern Thailand.
The Sydney Morning Herald has a report about the film which includes some recent comments about Burma from Stallone himself. It is worth a read.

Can’t wait to watch this one with popcorn and chai tea in my military apparel. Stallone should be US ambassador to ASEAN. Arnold is in power, why can’t it happen? Dream Sylvester, dream!

From AFTENPOSTEN.no, a Norwegian newspaper, more detail on the Burma officer who crossed into Thailand:
Burmese officer wants asylum in Norway
A high-ranking Burmese officer has deserted the country’s military junta, made his way into Thailand and wants to seek asylum in Norway.
Norwegian-German journalist Hans-Joachim Schilde told Aftenposten.no Tuesday morning that Major Htaly Win, age 42, and his 17-year-old son rowed over a river separating Burma and Thailand.
They were aided by members of the Karen folk who live in the area and long have been persecuted by the military junta.
Schilde said he accompanied the officer and his son as well. They were on their way to Bangkok Tuesday, escorted by a colonel from Thai security forces and an officer from the Karen guerrilla force.

The economic hardships at Burma must be intolerable. I read that CIA estimates (Y2006) inflation rate at this ‘hellhole’ at 21%, unemployment rate at 11% and people living below the poverty line at 25%. With dire statistics as above, Burma already one of the world’s poorest, is getting poorer each year under the dreaded junta.
Freedom for Burma!
