Today, The Jakarta Post’s correspondent in (of all places) “Tachileik” has reported that “Myanmar’s ruling junta have detained five generals and more than 400 soldiers for disobeying orders to shoot and beat monks and other activists who took part in recent protests in Yangon”. There are few details in the article but it does go some way towards clarifying some of the information in these earlier New Mandala posts.
If there is substance to this report (and there is good reason to think there might be) then the world will want to know who the senior officers are, and where they are being held…

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
