The Association for Asian Studies is currently holding its annual election. There is an election for the vice-president and also for a series of area-based councils. New Mandala readers who are members of AAS may be particularly interested in the Southeast Asia Council election where a number of familiar names are featured: Penny Edwards, Pattana Kitiarsa, Celia Lowe, Justin T. McDaniel and Eric Tagliacozzo. And the election for vice-president features the nominations of historian Craig Reynolds and anthropologist Bob Hefner. AAS members can vote online here. Votes must be cast by November 6.
Vote early but not often!

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
