New Mandala readers looking to understand the ongoing campaigns against the Burmese military regime will find an article in today’s Sydney Morning Herald is worth reading.  It describes Pannya Vamsa, co-founder of the International Burmese Monks Organisation, who is currently in Australia druming up support for tougher sanctions and more pressure on the generals in Naypyidaw.

DEVELOPMENT TAKES PLACE WHEN THERE IS PEACE…THERE IS NEED TO BE PEACE ALL OVER THE WORLD. IN THE RURAL COMMUNITIES WHERE INTER – TRIBAL WARS ARE COMMON, POVERTY IS COMMONPLACE. SUCH AREAS COULD BENEFIT FROM SOCIAL AND INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT WHICH WILL GO A LONG WAY TO IMPROVE UPON THE WELFARE OF THE RURAL PEOPLE

I agree with infrastructure development. I do not agree with sanctions.
If no one can touch China why must they punish Myanmar?

For those interested in Burmese literature, they may have a look at the working papers produced in the context of the “Myanmar Literature Projekt” at Southeast Asian Studies, University of Passau. The link is http://www.iseap.de/content/view/89/

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
