April 27th, 2008 by Nicholas Farrelly · Add a Comment

The world says we are wicked when our people grow opium. But when we stop it, the Burmese military government, although it has done nothing to stop in areas under its control, is praised for doing a good job.

- A Wa official from Shan State Special Region – 2 quoted in “Wa farmers demand return to poppy cultivation”, Shan Herald Agency for News, 23 April 2008.  For those who are intereted in trawling the archives, some useful New Mandala coverage of this issue is available here.

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
