Constitution report from Human Rights Watch

The generals expect the Burmese people to just shut up, follow their orders, and approve the draft constitution without any discussion or debate. That’s not exactly how democracies are born.

- Brad Adams, Asia Director at Human Rights Watch, in the press release launching a report on Burma’s constitution.  The referendum on the new national charter will be held on 10 May.  I guess we should expect a great deal of reporting and commentary on Burma in the lead-up, particularly with the response to Cyclone Nargis now kicking up a gear.

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
