Following yesterday’s post about Sondhi Limthongkul’s activities in the 1990s, a long-time New Mandala reader has sent through a scan of a 1997 Far Eastern Economic Review piece.
At that time, Sondhi was trying to develop “his media and telecoms interests into an empire big enough to fight off Western media titans like Rupert Murdoch.”
According to the decade-old report, “his outspoken pursuit of that vision–providing an ‘Asian perspective’ on the news–has propelled the combative Thai-Chinese entrepeneur to a prominence that far exceeds his net worth.”
There are lots of details in the FEER article that help paint a picture of Sondhi and his (pre-PAD) ambitions. The full article is available here.

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
