Thanong on Thailand’s new politics

May 6th, 2009 by Nicholas Farrelly · Add a Comment

Sondhi Limthongkul cannot remain on the defensive. The military wanted him dead. But miraculously he has survived the assassination attempt. He has spoken out on TV and hinted at the identities of those who masterminded the plot…We will have to see whether Abhisit has the guts to take on the top security personnel and replace them before he goes into the next general election. If he fails to do so, the Democrat will surely be dead meat.

- Extracted from Thanong Khanthong, “Abhisit may not last beyond August”, The Nation, 6 May 2009.  To my eye this article is particularly interesting for all sorts of reasons.  It is well worth a look for New Mandala reader attempting to get a handle on how some of the Thai political sands appear to be shifting.  Kudos to Thanong for putting it together.

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
