Karen at an Aussie Rules match

May 11th, 2009 by Nicholas Farrelly · 3 Comments

Yesterday was Mother’s Day in Australia.

In my efforts to catch up on the Southeast Asia-related news from the weekend I stumbled upon this short article in the Geelong Advertiser.  It highlights a group of refugees from Burma who were treated to Mother’s Day at an Australian Rules Football match.  By the looks of it, they had a good time.  Well done to all involved!

And, of course, a belated Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums who read New Mandala!

Wondering what on earth would inspire people to think that refugee mums want to watch Aussie Rules footy!!

Rugby-League-mad people from Sydney always said Melbourne-based Aussie Rules is for sophisticated boys and rough girls. May be the Karen Refugee Mums are in the latter category.

Kudos to the Geelong Advertiser, or Addy as it is known to us locals. Unfortunately they have now reached their quota of one interesting article per year!

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
