These photos were taken during a peaceful gathering of concerned Burmese citizens near Insein Prison. More details on this vigil are available here. The gathering was in support of detained Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, whose trial on a new set of charges began yesterday.
The photos were taken by activists from Generation Wave. This is a student network formed by young Burmese who were actively involved in the the 2007 uprising. The photos are low quality because they were taken at considerable personal risk with creative use of the available technology. Generation Wave is modeled on the ‘88 Generation Student Group of older activists like Min Ko Naing and Ko Ko Gyi and aims to mobilise young people to resist the Burmese military government.
These photos have been provided to New Mandala to help show those interested in Burmese affairs that protest against the Burmese military government continues. As the person who provided them suggested, the “photos, as well as the people depicted in them, are an important act of defiance and demonstrate the widespread anger on the street at Daw Suu’s treatment”.

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
