Earlier this week, Professor Duncan McCargo was announced as the winner of the 2009 Asia Society Bernard Schwartz Book Award for Tearing Apart the Land: Islam and Legitimacy in Southern Thailand. In August this book was reviewed on New Mandala. For those intrigued by the other contenders for this award, the list of short-listed titles is available here.
Congratulations Professor McCargo!
And thanks, as always, to Michael Montesano for keeping me in the loop (via the TLC list) of important developments in Southeast Asian Studies.

Please note: New Mandala encourages vigorous debate. However, for the moment we will only be publishing high-quality comments that make original contributions to discussion. There will, of course, still be space for pithy, humorous, eccentric and cheeky input. Short and sweet will usually trump long and involved. Repetitive ranting, unimaginative point-scoring and idle abuse will not be entertained. Comments which carry a real name are also more likely to be approved. Thank you for your ongoing interest and contributions.
