Imagine this: a hi-so khunying got annoyed by a group of political canvassers while she was shopping in a Bangkok market. The khunying began to use foul language with them, flaunting her exceptionally discourteous manner which was contrary to her high social status. A team member took photographs of the khunying as the drama was unfolding. The khunying demanded the female photographer delete the photos. Her demand was not met. The khunying then slapped the photographer accross her face. The drama ended at a police station. The khunying admitted the slapping incident. She paid a 500 baht fine and walked out of the police station.
It may sound like a typical bitchy Thai soap opera in which two women, competing for the same man, are involved in scratching, slapping, hair-pulling, and shirt-shredding. But the incident indeed took place on May 25, in the Bang Kho Laem district, in front of hundreds of on-lookers.
Khunying Puangthong Ketu-angkura, 62, reaffirms that the old Thai saying of “ตบหน้าเสียห้าร้อย” (paying a 500 baht fine for slapping) is still in fashion, and that it is worth every single baht just to humiliate one’s nemesis. As reported by the Bangkok Post, the South Bangkok District Court fined the khunying 500 baht for slapping the face of a woman who was helping a Peau Thai candidate campaign at a fresh market in Wat Phraya Krai area. Khunying Puangthong arrived in court after Ms Yanee Mohammad Isma-il, 24, filed a complaint with Wat Phraya Krai police. Yanee said that while she was helping Pongpisuth Jintasophon, a Peau Thai candidate in a constituency covering Yannawa and Bang Kho Laem districts, campaign at Kingchan market when she was slapped on the face by Khunying Puangthong who said she was annoyed because Yanee was making a loud noise.
Was this just a case of being annoyed by a loud noise? Khunying Puangthong happens to be the wife of General Thawat Ketu-angkura, former Permanent Secretary of the Defence Ministry. Being granted a series of royal decorations, Khunying Puangthong is also a former chairman of the Wives of Officials of Ministry of Defence Association of Thailand.
While Khunying Puangthong insisted that she hates loud noise, witnesses revealed that the hi-so khunying shouted at the Puea Thai campaigners, “กูไม่เลือกพวกมึง ไอ้พรรคขี้โกง” (I will not elect your cheating party). When asked by the police, Khunying Puangthong said, “ดิฉันไม่ได้เป็นพวกใครหรือชื่นชอบพรรคใดเป็นพิเศษ แต่ทนเสียงไม่ไหวเท่านั้น” (I take no side, neither favouring any particular political party. I just cannot bear loud noise.)
The market drama raises many questions. Does it signify a widening gap between two groups in society? Is this a case of the rich and powerful getting away with unsavoury behaviour? Or is it just about how a posh khunying, who all this time has pretended to live in a dignified world, has acted as one reporter said “ถ่อย” (vilely).
I hope that when her husband makes a noise at night he does not receive a slap.

What if someone from the lower classeswas to slap the Khun Ying. Would the said assailant receive the same 500 baht fine?
I fear not I’d see a jail term would be forthcoming.
The article in itself spells out all that is wrong with how class and status allows the upper classes in Thailand to act with impunity.
W ether its corruption, vehicle accidents which cause death, assault and murder, these untouchables seem to always be above the law.
Its no wonder accountability for ones actions is almost non existent across Thai society, when highly decorated citizens show no respect to their fellow Thais, only contempt as they are view everyone below them as peasants!!!

Someone please provide a link to the slapee, a tiny dark-skinned muslim girl (she looks 14, but is 24). Foder for any racial/religious theories behind Thailand’s chasm…

interesting to know if the “khunying” appeared at the police station on purpose to flaunt her relative immunity or because she was made to by the police
sharing John’s views, I suspect the former, over-weening pride but no dignity, no respect for anyone else, no guilt or remorse
from such springs the power of the redshirts and Peu Thai

Does the plaintiff satisfy with the verdict?
Would she like to see it go to appeal court and eventually to supreme court?

Can someone ask Khun Yanee to prove for me if the “double standard”is a fact of life in Thailand? I like to see Khun Yanee slap this Khun Ying back and I will pay the fine for her. 500 baht good investment to prove if Prai will get the same punishment or not.
Remember it is not a revenge it is a proof.

It’s quite normal for someone of high status like Khun Ying to treat a person of supposedly low status in such a way, although Khun Ying would talk sweetly to one of her peers or someone of higher status. In this instance it’s all the more admirable that the girl did not respond in the same way.

Ha – khunyings chasing the Pui Thai. Makes a change from red shirts chasing Abhisit. Maybe that class war that so many have been praying for will come about after all.

This KhunYing is mean and heartless. She has no right to physically abuse other people.

From my personal observation on the ground in the Land of Smiles, there are many Khun Ying’s who relish the chance to abuse any and all prai in their vicinity, whether verbally, psychologically or physically. It’s part of what makes their engine purr.
Perhaps out of suppressed rage at their errant husband’s constant romantic entanglements with the very same prai they so despise.

Is there any kind of anti face slap campaign? I am sick of hearing about this kind of filthy behaviour. What can we do about it? It is pathetic and wrong. The 500 baht token fine and the hi so thug’s need to publically flaunt it. How dare she? It’s like an anti fine – pay it and it shows you are willing and able to act like an untrained dog in public.

There’s a FaceBook page on her now. Worth a look for the photoshopped images of the khunying: http://www.facebook.com/pages/คุณหญิงพวงทอง-ผู้ดีสะบัดฝ่ามือตบไพร่/105493766206677

It’s wrong to slap another person, and if the extent of the law involved paying 500B to the police, not even the victim, that’s another example of the law failing to provide for justice. But this kind of violence with impunity takes place all the time in a hierarchical society. It’s not a question of rich or poor, dark or light, red or yellow. In hierarchical culture, it’s the relative status of the parties which dictates power relations and sense of immunity. In this example the huge social gulf between the two magnifies the apparent severity of the act. But it could have easily been a fishmonger in the market, not a khunying, and the slap would hurt just as much.

Military (wife) proudly hurts and humiliates Muslim (girl) in public, receives barely a slap on the wrist…
And we wonder why people are dying in the South?

I do hope Puea Thai will publicize this widely. Khunying Puangthong provided a perfect example of double-standards and a vivid illustration of their grievances.
Unfortunately, Puea Thai leaders have their khunyings as well, and are eager to protect their privileges. Despite the populist rhetoric, they’d instinctively side with their privileged amart peers rather than the phrai (latter are just peons in the power struggle).

Does it signify a widening gap between two groups in society?
r u serious with that question ? So in your opinion, that individual kunying represents the whole hi so class women ? Isn’t Pojjaman also a kunying herself lol ? You are not making sense here.
My friend was slapped by red shirt guard when he was trying to get into his office @ Rachprasong and refused to show his Thai i.d. to the guard. Now how do you think about it ? another case of gap widening ?
