New Mandala will soon launch a new series of vodcasts and podcasts similar to our earlier “Thailand in Crisis” and “Burma Votes 2010”. This new offering is a three-part series titled “ชาติ ศาสนา พระมหากษัตริย์: Nation, Religion, King”. It deals with some of the foundational issues in Thai politics, culture, economy and society today. I interview a wide range of expert commentators including Pasuk Phongpaichit, Chris Baker, Andrew Walker, Daungyewa Utarasint, Anders Engvall, Saran Santisart, Des Ball, Tyrell Haberkorn, Charnvit Kasetsiri, Pavin Chachavalpongpun and Patrick Jory.
The first episode in the new series, “Nation”, will go live tomorrow.

Would you consider hosting this on a site other than youtube or on multiple sites?
Thanks, R

Thanks Ricardo,
Current advice is that the episodes will be uploaded to the ANU Vision site, usually a day or so after they appear on YouTube. However, the videos are still hosted on YouTube so that may not help. We will also make sure the audio podcast is uploaded to Discover ANU, which may be an alternative option for you.
Of course, depending on demand there are other ways we can potentially distribute this series as well. We may be able to facilitate its distribution in other downloadable formats, or by DVD. There are a range of options.
Best wishes to all,
Nich

I am worry about your forgotten country. Cambodia also has similar original proverb too. “ជាតិ សាសនា ព្រះមហាក្សត្រ”
We perform it more internationally than other nation. Please don’t stole our cambodian cultural treasure.

I don’t understand why they can’t be uploaded to vimeo, youku (Japanese), tudou (Chinese, available everywhere) too. It’s surely not as if the ANU has some sort of contract with Youtube… Plus we could be appealing to Hugh White’s vision of the world in future by hosting on Tudou!

Thanks Sabai Sabai,
Keeping all of the ANU vodcasts in the one place has some advantages in terms of managing our University’s outputs, and YouTube is still the dominant vodcast platform. It’s user-friendly and works in most places, most notably Thailand. Of course, the videos can be uploaded elsewhere too, and perhaps in future they will be. We are very open to suggestions on other ways of getting vodcasts out to wide audiences. Our Nation, Religion, King series will be subtitled into Thai — that is one way we hope to maximise its accessibility.
But I am open to other good ideas.
Best wishes to all,
Nich

What’s thr issue with Youtube? Seems to work better for me than the others.

Nich: Transcripts? If you’re doing subtitling, why not make a transcript available from the subtitle txt. That’d be more accessible on the whole if everything went to muck because someone uploaded a video of a monarch doing something naughty, leading to the authorities banning youtube in Thailand again.
Leah: Youtube is all well and good – like a suburban house, functional. Has nice faucets.. but Vimeo is immense. It’s like a minimalist mud brick masterpeice found in a pomo architecture magazine… And Tudou for our national geopolitical purposes!

You can’t get Vimeo in Thailand. It is on the MICT banned list.

Vimeo’s not blocked in Thailand; maybe it’s just your ISP.
Nich,
A subscribable audio podcast (not on iTunes) would be great for those of us on the move.

Ricardo,
Part of the problem seems to be that censorship in Thailand is arbitrary and capricious and it is hard to tell who’s banning what or how they are actually banning it.
The censors whether they are the MICT or the ISPs seem to be quite dishonest and possibly ashamed about what they’re doing because they don’t tell the truth about it.
I tried vimeo again. As it was loading, it went to “waiting for w3.mict.go.th” and then it finally resolved as “Problem loading page”.
So I don’t know who’s doing it or how but effectively it’s banned for me. Of course, i could use proxy servers but I might find myself in breach of the Computer Crimes Act.
I use TRUE by the way.

How can you exclude ajaan Somsak Jeamteerasakul from your panel when you touch on the last element of the three pillars of the Kingdom?

Thanks mitrapaper,
No effort to exclude him, or anyone. The reason Ajarn Somsak is not involved in this series is that he was not in Canberra when it was recorded.
Best wishes to all,
Nich

I just want to refer back to the comments Ricardo and I made in Comments 9 and 11 about whether vimeo is or is not banned.
Well, apropos of something completely unrelated to Thai politics, I followed a link to vimeo tonight and it did not go through the MICT. This is good.
All I can think is that the MICT having banned so many thousands of websites, have forgotten precisely why they banned them in the first place and may be attempting to make amends.
Perhaps they read New Mandala for information on these matters.
