Jokowi vs Prabowo: tight-run race a turning point

Indonesia’s presidential election went down to the wire.

While former Jakarta governor Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has been declared the winner with 53 per cent of the national vote, his challenger, ex-general Prabowo Subianto, came within a hair’s breadth of winning power in post-Suharto Indonesia.

In this podcast, New Mandala speaks to Indonesia politics experts Professor Edward Aspinall and Dr Marcus Mietzner from the Australian National University’s College of Asia and the Pacific about the election.

Fresh from following the campaign of both candidates, they analyse its dynamics, and discuss what the outcome of the race between Jokowi and Prabowo means for the future of Indonesian democracy.

We started off by asking Aspinall and Mietzner how they categorised this election and its significance for Indonesia’s democracy.
