College of Asia and the Pacific Student Ambassadors: Catherine Moggach

05 March 2018

If you asked Student Ambassador Catherine Moggach to describe her university experience in three words, she would say “better than high school.”

Catherine is in her third year of a Bachelor of International Security Studies / Science, after transferring from a Bachelor of International Relations in her first year.

“I was shy in high school so I really grew when I came to university. Especially during O-Week week. I would try and put myself out there just to meet people.”

Now, Catherine says she enjoys being a Student Ambassador, where she chats to prospective students.

“I remember being one of those anxious first years who didn’t know what to do with my degree, so it felt really nice to be able to provide some advice… Since then I’ve seen some of them around and they’re like, ‘were you at the advisory day?’ And I’m like, ‘yes!’ And that’s pretty cool, weird but overall satisfying.”

Catherine’s best memory of CAP so far has been her study tour to Singapore and South East Asia in the winter holidays.

“I don’t know where I’d be without that trip. It was such a shaping experience,” she says. “I have friends now in America, Italy, London, China, Tokyo, Singapore and in other parts of Australia. It’s good to have that network.”

She describes one of her favourite moments from the tour, hiking up a mountain to visit the Borobudur Temple in Indonesia.

“We had to wake up at two am to catch this hour-long bus to get to these temples for sunrise… Some people were still falling asleep when we got to the top, we were so tired. But then the sunrise was the most amazing thing.”

When Catherine isn’t working you can usually find her in favourite study spot in the Biology Drop-In behind Hancock Library.
