Carlos Garcia Palacios was born in Santiago, Chile, on 16 May 1898 and died in Tahiti on 1 May 1970. After studying in Switzerland, he represented his country in Geneva in the International Labour Organisation and the League of Nations. For several years after World War II he was a member of the United Nations Secretariat in New York. He was appointed honorary Chilean consul in Tahiti and spent the rest of his life there. He wrote numerous articles for newspapers and magazines throughout the world.

This is an English translation of a novel written in French in 1960 under the title Tane Api or l'Homme blanc repart toujours. The novel was not published. In his book Tahitiens (Paris, 1962), Father Patrick O'Reilly described it as a philosophic study, light-hearted in appearance, but of a deeper intent, describing the soul of the Tahitian women.

Whitehouse (1815-1907) served as a missionary in India from 1842-1857. Following his return to England he was, on several occasions, acting Secretary of the London Missionary Society (the Congregational Council for World Mission, as of 1966).

A History of Niue to 1894 and The Loyalty Islands to 1896.

William A. Moody was a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Samoa in 1894-98 and 1908-10.

The diary contains an account of Moody's work in Samoa from October 1894 to May 1898 and from April 1908 to August 1910. In the interim years there is an account of his life in Arizona. The diary also contains some information on Fiji in 1908.

Mrs McHugh, d.1969, was a daughter of the Rev. A.J. Small, a Methodist missionary to Fiji.

There are two documents, both by Mrs McHugh. The first is an 89pp. typescript entitled 'Memoirs of Rev. A.J. Small, Fiji, 1879-1925', which was produced in a roneoed edition of eight copies. The other, a typescript of eight pages, is entitled 'Some Reminiscences'. It bears the pen-name 'Gone ni Bua' and refers to the period 1891-1925.

The accounts, by various authors, are as follows:

(1) 'Histoire de Rotuma' by Fr Joseph Trouillet, SM. This is in three exercise books covering the periods: a. 'Depuis l'origine des temps fabuleux jusqu'au retour des Missionaires Catholiques, l'an 1868'. b. 'Depuis le retour des Catholiques en 1868 jusqua l'annexion en Juin 1881'. c. 'Depuis Juin 1881-la fin de 1890'.
(2) The foregoing 'Histoire de Rotuma' contained in two exercise books labelled 'Ier Cahier' and 'II Cahier'.
(3) A journal kept on Rotuma from 1868 to 1871 by Fr L. Dezest, SM (one exercise book labelled 'Journal, Ier Cahier').
(4) A journal kept on Rotuma from 1868 to 1890 first by Fr Dezest, then by Fr Trouillet. (Three exercise books labelled: 'Journal II Cahier,' 'Journal III Cahier' and 'Journal IV Cahier').
(5) An account of Rotuma in about 1824 in Domeny de Rienzi's 'Oceanie', translated by Dr Hugh Macdonald (typescript).
(7) An account entitled 'La Premiere Soeur Missionaire a Rotuma' (roneoed).
(8) 'Historique de la Station St Michel, Upu, Rotuma', dated 7 April 1949, and signed by L. Soubeyran.

These papers comprise part of the records of the Vicariate of New Caledonia which are designated Oceania Nova Caledonia (ONC) in the Marist Archives. The ONC material fills four large filing cabinets which are listed as APM I ONC, APM II ONC, APM III ONC and AMP IV ONC. The ONC files are not as well organized as the other Pacific vicariates and they contain many unclassified and unnamed sections. Please also see PMB MS 161.
