Fiji Times - Extracts from

Essai de Grammaire' and 'Dictionnaire Fidjien-Francais'

  • AU PMB MS 451
  • Collection
  • 1854

These works are believed to have been compiled by either Father C. Mathieu, SM, or Father P. Michel, SM, of the Roman Catholic Mission, Fiji. A clue to the author's identity is a notation on the last page of the grammar which reads, 'faite a Rewa 1854'. Both Father Mathieu and Father Michel were stationed at Rewa from 1852 and were there in 1854. Father Mathieu died in Sydney, NSW, in 1872. Father Michel died in New Zealand in 1887. See also PMB 432.

Father Michel died in New Zealand in 1887. See also PMB 432

  • Collection
  • October 1894 - August 1910

William A. Moody was a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Samoa in 1894-98 and 1908-10.

The diary contains an account of Moody's work in Samoa from October 1894 to May 1898 and from April 1908 to August 1910. In the interim years there is an account of his life in Arizona. The diary also contains some information on Fiji in 1908.

Diaries

  • AU PMB MS 499
  • Collection
  • Oct. - Nov. 1877 & May - Dec. 1884

Archibald Taylor was a magistrate on Taveuni Island, Fiji. In lending Taylor's diaries to the Bureau for microfilming, Mr Thompson said in a letter dated 5 May 1972: 'I am sorry for the state of the diaries; they are as I received them for safekeeping from Harry Taylor, eldest son of J.G. Taylor, only son of Archibald Taylor. There must have been a great deal of records of this kind in the past, but through nobody taking care of them this is all that remains that I know of ...' The fragment of diary for 1877 is particularly dilapidated. It should be noted that the second date given in this fragment, Thursday, 1 October 1877, appears to be an error for Thursday, 1 November 1877.

Diaries for 31 October 1877 - 15 November 1877, and 1 May 1884 - 30 December 1884.
